We pump out septic tanks, holding tanks and dry toilets (from €75), install septic tanks with infiltration and biological plants (from €1,750) and help you understand how to register the system in Riga. In your request, give the distance from the road to the lid, because in Suži it affects the job more than elsewhere.

Suži: nature, distances and damp

Suži is a sparsely built neighbourhood in north-eastern Riga, by Lake Ķīšezers and forests. There are detached houses, gardens, low-rise buildings and large natural areas, and the main access is via Jaunciema gatve and local roads.

For a wastewater system, this means three things. First, plots tend to be large, so there is usually enough room for a drain field or a plant. Second, the lake, the forests and lower-lying spots make damp a real factor, which has to be checked before you choose. Third, the way from the street to the lid can be long, and the pumping job depends on it.

A long way to the lid: how we pump out

A vacuum tanker works with a hose that is run out from a place where the tanker can stop safely. The heavy tanker does not drive over lawns, soft gravel roads or forest tracks, because it sinks in and damages the surface. The further away the lid is, the more hoses have to be joined, and over a very long distance the job takes more time.

  • In your request, give the distance in metres from the road to the lid and say whether there are fences or gates on the way.
  • Write whether the private access road will take a lorry and whether there is room to turn around on it.
  • In winter, tell us who clears the snow up to your gate, and dig out the lid.
  • If a new system is still being planned, place the lid closer to the road: it will make every future pumping easier.

What suits a large plot by the lake

If the soil is sandy and the groundwater stays deep in spring, a septic tank with a drain field is the simplest solution: it needs no electricity, and each year you pay only for pumping. If the plot is in a low spot closer to the lake or there is clay in the ground, a biological treatment plant is a better fit; its treated water is discharged into a ditch or into infiltration.

  • Check the encumbrances on the plot in the cadastre or the Land Register: if the plot is in a water body protection zone, take this into account when planning where the system goes.
  • A BIO plant needs an uninterrupted power supply. If the power at your place tends to go off during storms, choose a plant with an alarm and keep an eye on it.
  • If the ditch is not on your property, agree the treated water outlet with its owner or manager before construction work begins.

A septic tank with the tank and installation costs from €2,200, a BIO plant for 4–6 people from €1,750 and the installation work from €800. If the groundwater is high: septic tank for high groundwater.

Gardens and seasonal houses

Gardens and summer houses often have a dry toilet or a small tank. It is best to request dry toilet pumping at the end of summer or in autumn, when the roads are dry and before the frost. If a garden house becomes a permanent home, switch to a septic tank or a BIO plant; see septic tank for a summer house and garden house.

How to register a system in Riga

  1. Form The registration application form for the system is on the Riga Housing and Environment Department's website mvd.riga.lv and on the latvija.gov.lv portal.
  2. Submission You can send it by post or electronically with a secure e-signature. The neighbourhood residents' centres can also help.
  3. Deadlines Existing systems had to be registered by the end of 2021, new ones within a month of construction, and changes must be reported within a month.
  4. Confirmation The register holder notifies you of the registration number and date within a month.

After registration, annual duties remain: pumping the septic tank at least once a year, maintaining the BIO plant according to the manufacturer's instructions and declaring the volume removed by 1 May. More: registering a decentralised sewage system.

Frequently asked questions

It's more than 30 metres to the lid. Can you pump it out?

In your request, give the exact distance and any obstacles. We bring the hose length needed or find a closer spot for the tanker. For a very long distance the price may be higher, and we tell you before the job.

Does a septic tank near the lake need a special tank?

The tank must be sealed, and in a wet spot a plastic tank is anchored so that the groundwater does not push it up after pumping. Even more important is where the clarified water goes: infiltration needs a dry layer of soil above the groundwater, otherwise it is better to choose a BIO plant.

Where can we discharge the BIO plant's treated water if there is no ditch?

Into the ground through an infiltration well or drains, if the soil filters well and the groundwater is not high. If the infiltration point is higher than the plant, the water is lifted with a pump.

Our septic tank has never been registered. What should we do now?

Submit a registration application to the Riga Housing and Environment Department now. The deadline for existing systems was the end of 2021, and for breaching Riga's rules, private individuals face a warning or a fine of up to €350.
