The right solution depends on the soil and the groundwater level. Choose what your plot has, and we'll show what is usually recommended.
Sand absorbs treated water well, so a septic tank and a drain field are usually enough.
About drain fields →Sandy loam absorbs water more slowly, so you need a bigger drain field or a biological plant with better treatment.
Septic tank or BIO plant →Clay hardly absorbs water, so a drain field often doesn't work. People choose a BIO plant with an outflow, or a holding tank.
Septic tank in clay soil →High groundwater can lift an empty tank, so it is anchored, and the drain field needs a raised design.
High groundwater →
We assess the tank We check the volume, fill level and access.
We connect the hose The vacuum tanker parks by the tank.
We pump it out Wastewater and sludge go to a treatment works.
We close up and tidy We check the lid and the area around the tank.
Our prices are published: septic tank pumping starts from €75. Describe your situation in a request, and we will contact you within 5 minutes of receiving it.
All prices are starting prices for a typical job. The final amount depends on the volume, the distance and the access. We confirm it in a quote before the work.
Before you send a request, it is worth knowing what system is buried on your property, because it determines both the work and how often the system needs pumping. There are three main types at private houses.
| System | What happens to the wastewater | What has to be done regularly |
|---|---|---|
| Septic tank (two or more chambers) | Solids settle, and the liquid flows out to a drain field or another infiltration system | Sediment pumping; in Riga at least once a year |
| Holding tank (sealed, no outlet) | Everything collects in the tank; nothing flows out | Complete pumping as often as it fills up |
| Biological treatment plant | A compressor supplies air, bacteria treat the water, and it is discharged into a ditch or the ground | Technical maintenance and pumping out excess sludge |
If you don't know exactly what is buried, write in your request how many hatches you can see and whether a pipe runs from the tank towards the garden. That is usually enough to tell whether your sewage system has a septic tank or a holding tank.
A septic tank suits a private house if the soil lets water through and the groundwater does not rise close to the surface in spring. A drain field can then be built after the septic tank. If the soil is clay or the groundwater is high, the usual choice is a biological treatment plant with an outlet to a ditch, or a sealed holding tank.
Before giving a quote, we find out the number of people in the house, the soil, the groundwater level, the distance to the well and the boundary, and where the vacuum tanker can get in. Read more about choice and sizes on the septic tank installation page, and about seasonal homes on the septic tank for a summer house page.
Septic tanks, holding tanks and factory-made treatment plants with a capacity of up to 5 m³ per day in villages and towns are decentralised sewage systems. They are covered by Cabinet Regulation No. 384: the system must be registered in the municipal register, its contents must be handed over regularly to a pumping contractor, and the pumping certificate must be kept for at least two years.
Each municipality sets the minimum pumping frequency in its binding regulations. In Riga it is at least once a year for a septic tank, while for a holding tank it depends on water consumption and the tank volume. Riga region municipalities have their own rules; we explain how to register a system on the registering a decentralised sewage system page.

We serve Riga and the Riga region. In Riga, septic tanks and holding tanks are mainly found in neighbourhoods of private houses, such as Mežaparks, Bieriņi, Trīsciems and Vecāķi.
Outside Riga we work in Mārupe, Ķekava, Ādaži, Salaspils, Baldone, Jūrmala and elsewhere. All places and each municipality's rules: where we work.
Pumping up to 4 m³ costs from €75, up to 6 m³ from €90, up to 10 m³ from €110. Outside Riga a travel charge of ~€1/km is added. The price also depends on the distance from the truck to the hatch and whether the hatch is freely accessible.
That depends on the number of people, water consumption and the tank volume. In Riga the set minimum for a septic tank is once a year; a holding tank must be pumped out as often as it fills up. Calculation: how often to pump a septic tank.
Yes. Cabinet Regulation No. 384 requires decentralised sewage systems to be registered in the municipal register. In Riga, for systems built after 2021, the registration application must be submitted within one month of construction or commissioning.
A septic tank is simpler and needs no electricity, but it needs soil that filters. A BIO plant treats water more thoroughly and also works in clay soil or with high groundwater, but it needs an uninterrupted power supply and annual maintenance.
