We pump out holding tanks in Riga and the Riga region with a vacuum tanker whose capacity matches your tank, and we take the contents to a wastewater reception point. Prices start from €75 for up to 4 m³. Send a request with the tank volume and the address.
How holding tank pumping differs from septic tank pumping
In a septic tank, wastewater settles and then flows on to the drain field, so it is mainly the sediment that is removed, usually once a year. A holding tank is a sealed tank with no outlet: it fills up exactly as fast as you use water, and it is emptied completely every time.
- The volume pumped out is almost the entire capacity of the tank, so the size of the tank determines which truck we send and what the price is.
- The frequency depends on water use, not on the calendar: in summer, with garden watering or guests, the tank fills faster.
- A plastic holding tank may only be emptied completely during high groundwater if it is anchored; otherwise groundwater can push it upwards. If you don't know whether the tank is anchored, say so in your request.
How often a holding tank needs pumping
The national rules require one thing: a holding tank must be watertight and emptied often enough that wastewater doesn't leak out, doesn't soak into the ground and doesn't cause odour. The minimum frequency is set by each municipality, and their calculation assumptions differ considerably.
| Calculation assumption (no water meter) | 3 people, per year | 6 m³ tank |
|---|---|---|
| Riga: 25 litres per day per declared resident | ≈ 27.4 m³ | minimum ≈ 5 times a year |
| Mārupe Municipality: 3 m³ per month per declared resident | 108 m³ | minimum 18 times a year |
If the house has a water meter, both municipalities calculate the frequency from its readings: the water used in a year divided by the tank volume. In practice this means that however many cubic metres a month the meter shows, that many cubic metres flow into the tank. More about the calculation and about septic tank frequency: how often to pump a septic tank and a holding tank.

What it means if the tank fills faster or slower than it should
Compare your water meter readings with how often you pump. This simple comparison shows the condition of the tank better than any inspection.
- The tank fills more slowly than you use water: most likely it isn't watertight and some of the wastewater is soaking into the ground. That is a breach of the rules and needs fixing.
- The tank fills faster than you use water: groundwater or rainwater is getting in through the joints, the lid or the inlet. Every time it is pumped, you are paying for water that isn't yours.
- In both cases, the tank can be inspected empty after pumping, when cracks and damaged joints are visible. For repairs, read the tank repair page.
What to prepare before holding tank pumping
The rules require the owner to agree the time in advance and to give the vacuum tanker clear access to the tank. In practice, this means a few things:
- The lid must be easy to find and open, not under snow, paving or a flower box.
- In your request, give the distance in metres from where the truck can park to the lid. That determines how many hoses have to be joined together.
- Gates unlocked, driveway clear. In spring and after heavy rain, a heavy vehicle can get stuck on a soft lawn. In that case the truck stays on the road and we work with a longer hose.
- If you know the tank volume, include it; if not, describe its size or age, and we will choose a truck with spare capacity.
How the pumping works
- Request You send the form with the address, the tank volume and the distance to the lid. We will contact you within 5 minutes of your request and agree the time and the price.
- Pumping The pumping contractor connects the hose, pumps the tank down to the bottom and, if needed, flushes out the sediment that has built up in the corners.
- Check In an empty tank, the inlet, the walls and the lid are visible. If we notice any damage, we tell you.
- Document You receive a certificate of the service with the address, the volume collected, the date and the pumping contractor's details.
Why you should keep the pumping certificate
Municipalities check whether holding tanks are pumped out regularly. The proof is the document issued by the pumping contractor. In Riga, the owner must submit a declaration of the volume removed in the previous year by 1 May, so it is easier to keep all the documents in one place. The requirements for contracts and documents are explained on the contract with a pumping contractor page.
Cabinet Regulation No. 384, point 9.1: the document confirming the service, with the address, volume, date and the pumping contractor's details, is kept for at least two years; point 9.3: the time is agreed in advance and clear access is provided. Riga Binding Regulations No. 66, point 5.6 (declaration by 1 May) and point 28.12 (the pumping contractor issues a document). Sources: likumi.lv, checked on 30 October 2026.
How much holding tank pumping costs
The price depends on the volume pumped out and the distance. Outside Riga we add a travel charge of about €1 per kilometre. A very long hose or a thick layer of sediment that needs flushing out can increase the price; we tell you this before the work starts.
