We pump out septic tanks and holding tanks (from €75), install septic tanks and BIO plants for summer houses and permanent homes, and clean café grease traps. It is best to send your request before or after the summer, when the streets are quieter.
Vecāķi: the sea, sand and the season
Vecāķi is a seaside neighbourhood of Riga with a beach and a pronounced seasonal peak. It has detached houses, summer houses, low-rise homes, and places for leisure and eating out. The neighbourhood is linked to the city by the railway and Vecāķu prospekts; in summer, access and parking are busier.
The sea wind, sand and dunes also shape how the wastewater system works. One street can have connections to the network of Rīgas ūdens (Riga's water utility) as well as septic tanks, holding tanks or BIO plants. Before making an offer, we find out what is actually in your yard instead of assuming from the street.
Sandy soil: an advantage and a reason for caution
Sand lets water through well, so a septic tank with a drain field on a sandy plot usually works well if the groundwater is not close to the surface. But water moves fast in sand, so the distance from the field to a drinking water well, yours or a neighbour's, is especially important. We check this before recommending where the field should go.
Over time, wind-blown sand and pine needles cover the lids. If a lid is buried, the tanker has to wait while it is dug out, so find it and mark it before pumping. In the hollows between dunes, the groundwater can be higher than at the top of a dune, and there a plastic tank is worth anchoring.
A house used only in summer
Riga's rules make no distinction between a summer house and a permanent home: septic tank sludge must be removed at least once a year, even if the house was lived in for only three months. The minimum frequency for a holding tank in Riga depends on the water consumption and the volume, but in practice summer guests, showers after the beach and laundry fill it faster than in winter.
- Pump out the septic tank before the season or right after it, so that there is room in the tank in summer.
- For a holding tank, plan an extra pumping in summer if there are more people in the house.
- Do not leave a BIO plant without wastewater inflow for long: the bacteria need food. For what to do in winter, see bacteria for BIO plants.
- Before leaving for the winter, drain the pipes that can freeze; see frozen septic tank.

A year in Vecāķi: what to request when
| When | For a private house or summer house | For a café |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Pumping before the season, checking the access hatch and cover | Grease trap cleaning before opening |
| Summer | Extra pumping for a holding tank if there are guests | Cleaning on a schedule, outside visitor peaks |
| Autumn | Pumping after the season and before the frost; BIO plant maintenance | Cleaning after the season ends |
| Winter | Lid dug clear of snow; tank not overfilled | If open all year, the usual schedule |
Cafés and food outlets in the season
In season, a seaside café usually serves more meals than in autumn, and the grease trap fills up faster. In Riga, discharging wastewater containing fats into the mains sewer is prohibited, and for places with their own tank, grease also clogs the septic tank and the infiltration. Grease trap cleaning costs from €90; during the season we agree a more frequent schedule and a time when there are no visitors at the building. For events with temporary toilets: portable toilet pumping.
Access in summer
On warm days there are more cars on Vecāķu prospekts and the streets near the beach, and in a narrow street one parked car can block the way for a lorry. So in summer we agree the time in advance and ask you to make sure there is free space by the gate. The heavy tanker does not drive on a soft sandy road or a lawn: it stops on a hard surface and we run a hose to the lid, so give the distance in your request.
Rules, prices and nearby places
Vecāķi is part of Riga, so Riga City Council Binding Regulations No. 66 apply: the system is registered with the Riga Housing and Environment Department, only a registered pumping contractor may pump it out, and a declaration of the volume removed in the previous year is submitted by 1 May. Septic tank pumping in Vecāķi costs from €75 up to 4 m³ and from €90 up to 6 m³, with no per-kilometre charge.
