Distances between buildings are long, some plots have wet soil, and a long access road may lead to the house. We choose and install a plant that suits the specific spot, pump out septic tanks and holding tanks even far from the road, and service BIO plants.
Wet lowland: septic tank, BIO plant or holding tank
A drain field needs dry, free-draining soil under the drains. In wet lowlands, groundwater can rise so high in spring that the septic tank water has nowhere to soak away: the field overflows and the septic tank fills faster.
| Solution | When it suits | What to bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Septic tank with a drain field | The plot has a drier, sandy spot | The field sits above the highest groundwater level |
| BIO plant discharging to a ditch | Wet soil, a ditch with flowing water nearby | Uninterrupted power, maintenance; the outlet may need a pump |
| Sealed holding tank | Nowhere to discharge, few people living in the house | Frequent emptying and a road for the tanker in every season |
Before we quote, we check the soil and, if possible, look at the nearest ditch: whether water flows in it and whether it is deeper than the outlet pipe. If the outlet runs into a ditch that you do not own, find out who the owner is right at the start. More: septic tank for high groundwater, drain field, biological treatment plants.
Power and alarms far from the house
A BIO plant's compressor needs a constant power supply. If the plant is far from the house, the cable length, burying it and a separate fuse have to be included in the estimate from the start. We set up the alarm for a high level or a compressor stoppage so that it can be seen or heard in the house, not just at the tank on the edge of the meadow.
Far from the road: the hose and access
Kleistu iela and the local roads lead to the properties, but the access road to the house can be long and unsurfaced. A full vacuum tanker is heavy and will not drive on a soft road or across a meadow. So we recommend placing a new tank or plant as close as possible to a road that can be driven on in any season.
Before pumping, describe in your request:
- the surface of the road from the street to the house and whether it is passable in spring;
- the width of the gate and whether there is room to turn round in the yard;
- the approximate distance from where the tanker can stand to the lid;
- whether the lid is dug out and can be opened.
If the distance is long, we work with extra hoses. A longer hose means more time, so we factor that into the price in advance, not after the job.
Farm, equestrian and sports sites
For a stable, a sports centre or a farm building with a toilet and showers, the rules are the same, but the load is different. At a weekend or on a competition day, water consumption can be many times higher than on a weekday, so we choose the plant for the peak load, not the average. A load that varies too much can disrupt the bacteria in a BIO plant; then a holding tank that is pumped out when full, or a plant with a balancing tank, may be the better choice.
For sites like these: treatment plants for businesses, septic tank pumping for businesses, and for events portable toilet pumping.
Riga's rules apply in Kleisti too
Although Kleisti looks like countryside, it is a Riga neighbourhood, and every septic tank, holding tank and BIO plant is subject to Riga City Council Binding Regulations No. 66. A newly built system is registered with the Riga Housing and Environment Department within a month; the same deadline applies to notifying a change of owner, tank or number of residents.
Septic tank sludge must be removed at least once a year. A factory-made plant is serviced as set out in the manufacturer's documentation. Anyone who does not follow the rules faces a warning or a fine of up to €350 (70 penalty units).
Even far from the centre, a tank may be pumped out only by a pumping contractor from the list published by the department. After each visit, keep the document with the address, date and volume: the annual total goes into the declaration due by 1 May. If a city network has already been built near your property, Riga pays €1,000–2,000 towards connecting a residential house, depending on the length of the connection pipe (connecting to the mains sewer).
