Zaķusala: many sites, few homes

Housing on the island is limited, so private septic tanks are a minor issue here. The work is driven by media, offices, events and property development. Each has different sewage needs: an office needs a grease separator, an event needs portable toilets, a construction site needs temporary sanitary solutions, and waterfront buildings have basement and pumping issues.

Events and construction sites: portable toilets

At events and on construction sites, toilet cabins fill up at different rates. On a construction site, a few workers use them every day, but at an event hundreds of visitors use them within a few hours, so at a multi-day event the cabins also need emptying between the event days, not just afterwards.

• In your request, give the dates, the number of cabins and the approximate number of visitors or workers.
• Leave a clear path for the tanker to the cabins: tents, a stage, cables on the ground and piles of materials can block it.
• Cabins standing together next to a hard road are quicker to pump out than ones scattered across the whole site.

Office and media complexes: what to include in your request

• Which building or block the separator or station belongs to, and where the lid is.
• Whether the site has a pass system and who issues the entry permit.
• Whether the lid is in an underground car park, under a canopy or on a lawn where heavy machinery may not drive.
• Who the certificate should be issued to: the building manager or the tenant.

Office kitchens and cafés

In office buildings with a café or staff canteen, a grease trap is mandatory, because Riga's rules prohibit discharging fats into the city sewer. If the separator is not cleaned, grease hardens in the building's outlet pipe, and the blockage affects the whole building.

The waterfront, basements and pump stations

The Daugava, its floodplains and the wind shape conditions on the island's waterfront. In lower-lying spots and basements, water can collect after heavy rain. If it is muddy or mixed with sewage, we pump it out with a vacuum tanker and take it to a reception point instead of releasing it into the river or the storm drain. More: basement pumping.

Access via the Island Bridge

Zaķusala is reached via the Island Bridge (Salu tilts), and the transport junctions are concentrated, so only a limited number of exits lead from the bridge to any given site. Before the job, we confirm which exit to take into the site, whether there is a pass system and where the tanker can stand without obstructing traffic. On days of big events, access to the island may be restricted, so it is better to plan cabin pumping before visitors arrive or after the event ends.
