Production and warehouse areas

On large sites the sanitary facilities are not always close to the street sewer. If a workshop, warehouse or gatehouse is far away, the wastewater can be collected in a holding tank or pumped on by a pump station. Either way, the tank must be emptied regularly and the documents kept, because they can be requested during a municipal inspection.

For a regular schedule we agree the collection day and volume. After the first two or three visits you can see whether the tank is filling as expected; if it fills faster, rainwater or groundwater may be getting in, and it is worth checking that before you pay for extra cubic metres.

We remove domestic wastewater and sludge. If process liquids or chemicals get into the tank, mention it in your request, because contents like that have to be discussed separately.

Holding tank or pump station for a building far from the street

If only a few people work in the building and water consumption is low, a holding tank with regular emptying is the simplest solution. If consumption grows, emptying becomes frequent and expensive; then it can be cheaper to pump the wastewater to the nearest manhole of the city network with a sewage pump station and a pressure pipe.

To compare, you need three figures: the annual water consumption from the meter, the tank volume and the distance to the network. A station costs from €1,650, a pressure pipe from €25/m, and each emptying from €75 for up to 4 m³ or from €110 for up to 10 m³.

Streets of detached houses: septic tank or connection

Detached houses in Iļģuciems may have a connection to the city network or an old septic tank or holding tank. If there is a sewer in the street, Riga co-finances the connection of a residential house: €1,000, €1,500 or €2,000, depending on whether the connection pipe is shorter than 5 m, 5–20 m or longer. The support is for residential houses only; warehouses and workshops are not eligible.

Apartment estates

For estate buildings our work concerns what lies under the building and in the yard: pump stations where basement premises are lower than the sewer main, inspection chambers and the yard sections up to the control manhole. Daugavgrīvas iela, Buļļu iela and the tram

Iļģuciems is crossed by busy streets with tram lines. A vacuum tanker must not block the tracks, so for buildings along these streets we look for a spot in the yard or a side street and run a longer hose.

Rules: a company's tank must be registered too

Riga City Council Binding Regulations No. 66 apply to all decentralised sewage systems in Riga, not only to private houses. A workshop's holding tank or a warehouse's septic tank must be registered with the Riga Housing and Environment Department just like a house's tank, and changes must be reported within a month.

A representative of the department has the right to access the system and ask for the emptying documents. For breaches, a legal entity can be fined up to 280 penalty units. An inspection goes smoothly if the system is registered and the certificate for each emptying has been kept.
